The School of Musical Instrument Crafts’ Piano School welcomed back one of its own this week as alumnus Martin Stokes returned to campus to share his experience and expertise with current students.
A graduate of the piano tuning and repair course, Martin is now the co-founder of PianoSmiths, a renowned British manufacturer specialising in high-quality piano tools for technicians.
His visit offered students a valuable opportunity to learn first-hand how the skills developed at the School can translate into a successful and innovative career within the piano industry.
During his time on campus, Martin toured the Piano school as well as the School’s tool-making and engineering workshops, meeting staff and students while gaining insight into the continued development of facilities that support hands-on craftsmanship.
He delivered an engaging talk about his journey from student to business owner, outlining how PianoSmiths blends traditional craftsmanship with modern technology and materials to create precision tools used by piano technicians worldwide.
PianoSmiths has built a strong reputation for producing tuning hammers, regulating tools and other specialist equipment designed to help technicians achieve the perfect pitch, tone and touch. Martin emphasised the importance of reliability, durability and attention to detail - values that were nurtured during his time at the School.
As part of his commitment to supporting future technicians, Martin kindly offered sending a selection of complimentary tools for students to trial on workshop pianos. The initiative will allow learners to experience professional-grade equipment while developing their technical skills.
The visit also marks the beginning of what both Martin and the School hope will become an annual event, strengthening ties between the institution and industry.
Regular engagement with professionals provides students with invaluable networking opportunities, helping them build relationships that can support their transition into the trade.
In a further show of support, Martin expressed his willingness to mentor a local student and potentially offer hands-on experience within his business, helping ease the move from education into professional practice.
Course Coordinator, Simon Topping, said: “It’s important for our students to experience industry visits to enhance their student experience. Direct contact with successful alumni demonstrates the real-world impact of their training.”
Martin’s return not only celebrated his own achievements but also reinforced the strong community and professional connections that continue to define the School of Musical Instrument Crafts.
