World class craftmanship at Newark

A new book celebrating the craft and culture of violin making in Newark has just been published - and it holds special significance for the School of Musical Instrument Crafts and its community.

Titled Violin Making: The Newark Way, the book written by Claire Hutter (née Nichols) is available via the International Violin Bridge Competition website, and offers readers an inside look at the art and practice of violin making as shaped by Newark’s rich tradition of luthiery. The publication can be purchased online and is already drawing interest from makers and musicians alike.

This book’s arrival is especially meaningful because its author is a former student of the School of Musical Instrument Crafts (1989-1991) which has nurtured generations of skilled makers in violin making and repair since 1972.

The School of Musical Instrument Crafts in Newark has long been recognised for its hands-on training and international reputation, attracting students from across the UK and around the world. Courses, ranging from violin and woodwind making to guitar and piano repair, are led by experienced craftspeople, giving learners both practical skills and deep insight into traditional instrument making.

Violin Making: The Newark Way not only explores technical aspects of violin craftsmanship but also weaves in the story of Newark’s unique place in the world of luthiery - its people, its techniques, and the community that keeps this heritage alive.

In recognition of the book’s value to study and inspiration for future makers, the school has purchased a copy for the Newark Library. This edition is now available for current students to read and reference as part of their studies and personal exploration of the craft. The library copy provides an accessible way for students to engage with techniques and insights directly connected to their own learning environment.

The publication of Violin Making: The Newark Way stands as a testament to the enduring influence of the School of Musical Instrument Crafts and its alumni. It highlights not only the practical skills taught here but also the passion and dedication our community brings to preserving traditional crafts in a modern world.

For students eager to dive deeper into violin making or to find inspiration from someone who once walked the same workshops and corridors, the book in the Newark Library offers a valuable and timely resource.
