The learners played their handcrafted instruments with soloist Olga Eckert from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire at Trent Chamber Academy’s (TCA) annual May concert at Newark Town Hall.
The orchestra was made up of past and present students from the School of Musical Instrument Craft based at Newark College, as well as musicians from the local area.
The concert formed part of Lutherie Day, an annual violin making conference held in Newark, which attracts around 180 students, professionals and amateur makers and musicians year after year.
Student Finn Trucco said: “What makes the concert really special is that we’re playing instruments that we’ve made either this year or last year.
“We swap instruments, so it’s an opportunity to get feedback on our making and to hear them played in an orchestra setting. We also have a full wind section entirely from the woodwind course.
“We display our instruments for the audience to see during the interval.”
The TCA is a student-led organisation founded in 2002 by Catherine Janssens an ex-learner from the College’s school and musical director Roger Bryan. They shared a common goal to give students and musicians in the Newark area the opportunity to make music together.
The Academy has seen its ambitions and repertoire expand ever since, both in the range of pieces it performs but also with invitations to appear with Newark Choral Society, Newark Music Club and Newark Festival.
The passion and energy of the members, their musical experience and willingness to learn shows the inspiring environment at the School of Musical Instrument Craft.
