Gerard Kilbride trained at Newark School of Violin Making and graduated in 1989. Since then, Gerard worked for several years for large violin shops in Bristol, before moving on to specialise in restorations mainly for the trade.

"The decision to study at Newark College was simple, its reputation spoke for itself. Known for its specialist expertise and respected heritage in violin making, Newark College offered the perfect environment to develop both traditional craftsmanship and creative thinking.

Reflecting on the experience, the highlights were the people, place and possibilities. The course provided not only technical skills, but also a strong sense of community and inspiration that left a lasting impact.

Since graduating, the course has led me to a lifelong career making, repairing, and restoring instruments. The creative and reflective nature of instrument making has also influenced work beyond the workshop.

Making instruments gives you a lot of time to think and it has enabled me to create and deliver a wide range of interesting projects.

My passion for developing ideas and bringing projects to life continues to drive my work today. For anyone considering the same course, their advice is clear: do it, and be prepared for it to change your life.”
