World class craftmanship at Newark

Students from the Piano School at the Newark School of Musical Instrument Crafts recently travelled to London for an inspiring and informative visit to two of the world’s most renowned piano companies: Steinway & Sons and C. Bechstein.

At Steinway, the group was warmly welcomed by David Widdicombe, Head of Service and Technical. Students were taken behind the scenes into the workshops, where they saw pianos being expertly rebuilt. This was followed by an engaging illustrated talk, offering valuable insight into the craftsmanship and technical precision involved in piano restoration.

We were also joined by Ulrich Gerhartz, Head of Concert Hire and Tuning, who spoke about the importance of high-quality training, ongoing professional development, and staying connected within the industry after graduation.

After lunch, the group visited Bechstein Hall, where students explored a selection of new instruments and experienced an illustrated performance in the hall’s state-of-the-art recital room - complete with adjustable acoustics and lighting. The visit also included meeting a recent apprentice who had completed her training at the Bechstein factory in Germany, offering students a real-world perspective on career pathways in the trade.

Piano Tuning and Repair Course Coordinator, Simon Topping, said: "The trip was a rewarding experience, providing valuable industry insight, professional connections, and inspiration for future careers. It was fantastic to see the students making the most of this opportunity."
