Last week, the Newark School of Violin Making had the pleasure of welcoming experts from Thomastik-Infeld, who joined us to share their incredible knowledge of string technology.
It was a fascinating deep dive into everything that shapes a string’s character - from tensions and winding techniques to the different metals used in their construction.
We explored how strings can enhance an instrument’s natural voice, bringing out brightness, brilliance, warmth, or even helping to strengthen areas that might feel less responsive.
What really stood out was the language used to capture the subtle qualities of sound. It gave everyone a new way of thinking about tone and expression.
Third year student Steph White said: "Thomastik's enthusiastic and extremely skilled staff introduced new language to our repertoire in understanding. We practised how a thoughtful and considered selection of strings can bring an instrument previously identified as a little lacklustre suddenly emanating the most brilliant fire and fizz."
A huge thank you to the Thomastik team for such an inspiring and insightful session, as well as all our industry supporters, including Pirastro, Larsen, and D'addario who support our School and students.
