Students from the School of Musical Instrument Crafts Volunteer at Special Ukrainian Celebration Evening

Newark and Sherwood District Council hosted a wonderful evening of entertainment and food to give thanks to hosts from around the district and bring families together one year on from the first guests arriving.

As guests arrived at the celebration event they were treated to some live music from our students at the School of Musical Instrument Crafts who volunteered their time to play at the celebration.

Ethan Hartsoe, who is studying on the BA (Hons) Musical Instrument Crafts (Guitar Making and Repair) degree and Hossein Degani, studying the BA (Hons) Musical Instrument Crafts (Piano Tuning and Restoration) degree, played some lovely live music for the guests, providing the perfect background for a buzz of conversation and celebration.

Ethan Hartsoe, said: "I really enjoyed playing at the event and would love to be involved again!"

Manuel Aragon, teacher of Guitar Making and Repair, added: "Although I acted as a mere facilitator, helping the organisation to find musicians, it was a real pleasure to hear from my students about their willingness to be part of it. They are both such talented musicians.

"Local associations and the Council are normally involved in amazing projects such as this one. I'm glad to hear that their music filled the walls of the Town Hall during the reception."

The students played in front of a sunflower quilt backdrop that was created in August 2022 using sunflowers made from across the district to mark Ukrainian Independence Day and will go on to be displayed at Newark College.

The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine and a symbol of peace and unity. These workshops were created to let both adults and children show their support for the country in a creative way and to make the Ukrainian refugees in the district feel welcome and acknowledged.

The evening was arranged, organised and hosted by the Newark and Sherwood District Council Community Development team as part of their on-going support for families hosting Ukrainian families in the district.
