Biography

Course Coordinator and Teacher Guitar Making and Repair at Newark College since 2004.

James Lister studied guitar making first at Guildhall University (formerly London School of Furniture) and then at the Newark College with Roy Courtnall and Tony Johnson. He set up his own workshop in Sheffield whilst still a student at Newark.

He makes mostly traditional classical guitars, but has made a small number of steel-string acoustics, and even a few electric guitars in recent years.

James has been teaching Guitar Making at Newark since 2004 and has published a video course in French polishing for guitar makers.

He has a particular interest in the use of sustainable and non-tropical woods in luthiery, making his 100th guitar in 2015 using FSC certified spruce and maple.
