Biography

Teaches specialist tools across all MIC courses at Newark College since 2013.

Gavin originally studied computer engineering before training as a teacher of mathematics.  Following a change of career direction, he worked in the aerospace industry, building and repairing small gas turbine engines and latterly working to produce power units for research in the advanced aerospace sector as well as developing educational systems for universities. It is here that his practical engineering skills were developed.

Following another change of direction, Gavin studied Piano Tuning and Repair at Newark College. During which he put his engineering skills to work, firstly making piano tuning tools for himself, other students and then the tutors, establishing a relationship with the College and a reputation as a maker of specialist tools.

After graduating from the Piano Tuning course at the College in 2013, Gavin took a position as tutor in the engineering department of Musical Instrument Crafts, where he has been able to share a unique mix of skills and knowledge to help the students to design and make their own specialist tools for instrument making and repair.
