The Intermediate Woodwind Making and Repair course is designed to follow on from the Fundamentals course, and will develop the skills necessary to maintain, repair and restore the whole range of woodwind instruments. You will also develop techniques for hand-making woodwind instruments.
Awareness and application of safe working practices will be central throughout the course.
Completion of this one-year programme will equip learners for further study in the field and progression onto the Advanced course
Typical Topics
Repair Techniques - you will be introduced to a wider range of instruments within the flute, clarinet, double-reed and saxophone families. Learners will also study more advanced repairs within these families such as crack repair, tone hole replacement, dent repair, soldering etc..
Making Techniques – Making Techniques will practice and develop the making of the individual components of a woodwind instrument, and combining them to form working mechanisms.
Applied Acoustics – This module will introduce basic acoustics theory. You will develop an understanding of the acoustic properties of woodwind instruments, and how physical modifications to their design will influence the sound produced.
Problem Solving – Although a career in Woodwind Making and Repair involves solving problems every day, this is often done in a very informal way. This module will introduce you to formal techniques for solving problems to develop critical thinking and analysis.
Making Specialist Tools – builds on the practices from the Fundamentals course. You will have the opportunity to design and develop tools to your own specifications. This will include learning how to produce your own technical drawings to a recognised standard, which will include CAD training. Advice will be given on equipping and maintaining your own workshop.
Applications to this course are made directly to the College.
Our courses are designed as a progressive pathway, with flexible entry points for different experience levels. Completing the full sequence within a discipline provides complete training from beginner to industry-ready standard.
