The Foundation Violin Making programme has been designed for students who wish to pursue a career in violin making.
This one-year year, full-cost, Foundation course can provide students with the opportunity to develop the underpinning skills and knowledge preparing them for progression or employment.
Students have the opportunity to make elements of a violin (in the white) based on the Stradivari design and to develop their skills and techniques in making instruments, with the option to work towards the completion of the instrument at their own pace.
This includes: the use of hardwoods and softwoods, use and maintenance of tools, marking out from plans and data sheets, template and jig making, joints used in instrument making and types and use of adhesives.
Applications to this course are made directly to the College.
Applicants must be assessed via an interview that might include a practical test to the tutor discretion.
This diagnostic assessment is part of the admissions process and aims to identify attributes or skills in the learner that suggest appropriate pathways of study, or to identify learning difficulties that require support and resolution.
This form of assessment is carried out at the initial interview stage when applicants’ portfolios are examined to assess the appropriate skills and basic understanding required for their choice of programme.
Please note, the Foundation courses are for adults 18+
Learners will be encourage to produce a portfolio.
Progression on to the next Violin course.
This is a full cost course, £3,500.
