This is part one (10 weeks) of a three-part programme. All three parts can be taken in an academic year. Classes take place on Tuesday or Thursday evenings. Please state your preference in your application.
Learn violin making skills in a sociable, friendly atmosphere.
The course is based in the workshops of the internationally known Newark School of Violin Making. It provides an opportunity to learn the basic techniques and processes involved in making your first violin.
It is the perfect introduction for anyone who wishes to build up specialist knowledge and skills while working at their own pace, either to plan a career in the lutherie trade or to develop a hobby and make their own instrument.
During this course, you can gain practical experience in:
Violin design
Methods of construction
Use of tools
Varnishing techniques.
You will keep a written record that documents all the stages of your work. If you aim to complete a finished violin in the year, this will involve a considerable amount of extra time in addition to classes.
There are no qualifications required for this course.
This course is only available to learners aged 19+.
There is no formal assessment.
You are required to complete block one in order to progress onto blocks two and three.
This is a full cost course, £300 per part.
